Friday, July 26 -- Scripture Meditation

Matthew 5:38-41

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ 39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you."

  1. This is the epitome of counter-intuitive. No matter how much I struggle with this, the struggling remains. Lord, help me to realize that in some incredibly central ways, my intuition is not your intuition.

  2. The command to "give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you" are the type of passages that I automatically tune out as impossible to obey. I look for ways to justify and mitigate the full impact of what Jesus is saying. Well, Jesus said no at times; it would be impossible to give all the time, etc... I am quick to dismiss what is meant to be transforming.... Lord, be gracious to me and strengthen my faith.
