Matthew 5:8

"Blessed are the pure in heart,

    for they will see God."

  1. It is to "see" God through our biases and preferences. But when we do so, we rarely see God for who he is. I know that the God I pursue can often be a God of my own making, my own golden calf that I declare to be the god who delivered me. When my heart is pure, then I'm blessed, for it is then that I truly see God.

Lord, create in me a clean heart that I may see you.

  2. To see God is not just the desire of the 'really spiritual' striving away at some lonely place in monastic zeal. To see God is not a fanciful longing that will never go fulfilled either. To see God is simply our salvation. To see Christ, to see God in Christ, is to receive the blessing of a pure in heart. Which means that purity in heart is now made possible for those who are in Christ. This is the amazing gift of Christ. Now, do I appreciate the enormity of this gift?
