Saturday, July 20 - Scripture Meditation

Matthew 5:29-30

"If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell."

  1. Lord, please help me to choose that which is more important in life. Help me not let the lesser, fleeting pleasures of sin and worldliness distract me from pursuing you wholeheartedly.

I sometimes wonder why Jesus adds "throw it away" to the command to "gouge" and "cut it off"? Wouldn't it be enough to gouge one's eye? or to cut off one's hand? But there's something about "throwing it away" that rings final. Lord, help me to be ruthless when dealing with sin in my life.
